A Colorful Fall Wedding at Howard County Conservancy | Woodstock, MD
Marissa and Chris were married on September 26, 2026 at the Howard County Conservancy in Woodstock, Maryland, a 232-acre historic farm and nature center between Baltimore and DC. Their celebration featured a joyful baraat procession with live dhol drumming, multiple outfits for the bride and groom, and rainy-day portraits in the gardens.
From the very first minute of a packed day, Marissa and Chris's wedding felt like a party. Bringing their families together from different corners of the globe, the couple brought about 100 of their favorite people to the quiet countryside and filled it with color, music, and joy. The whole day carried this easy, happy energy that was a pure gift to photograph. From the soft, tender in-between moments to the big, loud, everybody-on-their-feet celebrations, this wedding had it all.
Getting Ready Together in West Friendship
Marissa and Chris started their wedding morning side by side at a cozy rental in West Friendship, Maryland, just a short drive from the Conservancy. They skipped a traditional first look and got ready together instead, and I think it set the tone for the whole day. There was no rushing to keep them apart, just two people easing into one of the biggest days of their lives in the same room. I love when couples forgo traditions and make something work for them.
Marissa wanted her details captured while she was wearing them, not laid out on a table, so I spent the morning photographing the jewelry, fabric, and finishing touches as they came together on her. Mehndi is one of my favorite Indian bridal customs, and I love spending time capturing those intricacies on film.
A Rainbow of Indian Wedding Outfits
Another favorite part of this wedding was the color! Marissa’s ceremony saree, with its jewel tones, intricate embroidery, and shimmering fabrics, looked incredible against the greens and golds of a Maryland garden in early fall. Outfit changes are always fun for a photographer because every new look brings a fresh mood to the gallery, but Indian wedding colors are so bold, it’s a extra treat.
What Makes Howard County Conservancy a Great Wedding Venue?
The Howard County Conservancy is a nonprofit nature center on a 232-acre historic farm in Woodstock, Maryland, about 15 minutes from Columbia and Ellicott City. It offers several ceremony spots, including the Honors Garden, Theresa's Garden, and the rustic Montjoy Barn, plus the light-filled Gudelsky Environmental Education Center for receptions. Rental fees support the Conservancy's land preservation and environmental education work, which makes celebrating there feel extra meaningful.
For photos, it is a dream. Open fields, gardens full of native Maryland plants, and wooden beams that glow in afternoon light give you a little bit of everything without ever leaving the property.
Couple Portraits and Family Photos Before the Ceremony
Marissa and Chris did all of their portraits, wedding party photos, and family groupings in the early afternoon, before the ceremony. Shooting ahead of time meant they could walk straight from their vows into the celebration without missing a single minute with their guests. That was extra important becuase of the dhol processions they’d planned.
Marissa is wonderfully comfortable in front of the camera, while Chris is a bit more reserved, so we leaned into what felt natural for both of them. Some frames are sweet and quiet, a hand squeeze here, a shared laugh there, and others are full of that big, bright joy they brought to everything. It is my favorite kind of balance, because the photos look exactly like them.
A Baraat Entrance With Dhol District
If I could relive one moment from this wedding on repeat, it would be the baraat. If you’re not familiar, a baraat is a celebratory wedding procession from South Asian tradition, full of music, dancing, and pure, loud happiness on the way to the ceremony. Marissa and Chris made their way to their afternoon ceremony surrounded by a small group of their people, with the drummers of Dhol District keeping the energy sky-high.
The dhol is impossible to stand still to. Everyone was dancing, laughing, and hyping each other up, and the reactions from the waiting guests were just as fun to capture as the procession itself. These are the frames where you can practically hear the drums, and I was living for it!
The Ceremony and an Exit Baraat Through the Gardens
After the vows, the party did not slow down for a second. Instead of a traditional recessional, Marissa and Chris led an exit baraat with every single guest, winding in one big procession through the Conservancy gardens before cocktail hour began. Picture about 100 people dancing their way along garden paths in the late afternoon light, and you get the idea. It was such a creative way to bring everyone into the celebration together, and it is one of the most joyful things I have ever photographed.
A Reception Built Around Food, Dancing, and Their People
Cocktail hour rolled right into a reception that was all about good food, good music, and good people. Dinner was a buffet from Baltimore favorite Ekiben, and instead of a traditional wedding cake, dessert came from Taharka Brothers Ice Cream. Local, delicious, and a little unexpected, which felt just right for these two.
A few heartfelt speeches came next, and then DJ Welvin packed the dance floor and kept it full. Between songs, Marissa and Chris made their way around to visit every table, soaking up time with the people who came to celebrate them.
Celebrating Marissa and Chris
Marissa and Chris, thank you for trusting me with a day so full of color, music, and love. Your wedding was a reminder that the best celebrations are the ones that look and feel completely like the people at the center of them.
