A Dock 5 Wedding at Union Market | Washington DC Wedding Photographer

bride and groom photo

There’s something about couples who know exactly the kind of day they want and aren’t afraid to trust the process. Nick and Kimberly are exactly those people, and photographing their wedding at Dock 5 in Washington DC was one of those experiences that reminds me why I love this work so much.

From Union Market Beers to Wedding Bells

Nick and Kimberly both grew up in Baltimore and have known each other for over 15 years, connected through a web of childhood friendships that eventually wove their lives together in DC. They didn’t start dating until they reconnected here as adults, a relationship that had time to grow roots long before it bloomed.

Getting to know Kim and Nick was so much fun as we planned for their day. These two love to cook, love good food, love the energy of the DC neighborhood they’ve called home for years. I met them for beer and ice cream pre-wedding, and it was immediately clear that they didn’t need much, just someone to show up and capture them being them.

Why Dock 5 at Union Market Is One of DC’s Best Wedding Venues

When couples ask me about wedding venues in Washington, D.C., Dock 5 doesn’t always comes up, and I need that to change! Located just behind Union Market in the NE quadrant of the city, Dock 5 is a stunning 17,000-square-foot industrial event space that brings a raw, architectural energy that’s nearly impossible to replicate elsewhere in DC.

Nick and Kimberly had originally been considering The Line Hotel, but ultimately fell in love with the industrial aesthetic of Dock 5. The exposed structure, the soaring ceilings, and the urban grit softened by warm lighting suited them perfectly. They didn’t want fussy or formal. They wanted real and a little bit cool, and Dock 5 delivers that in spades.

For photographers, Dock 5 is genuinely exciting to work in. The textures, the light, and the architecture all create a natural backdrop that gives images depth and character without needing much else. Paired with the buzz of the Union Market neighborhood just outside, there’s no shortage of moments to find.

An Engagement Story Written in Portugal

While we skipped a traditional engagement session together (more on that in a moment), Nick and Kimberly’s love story has one of the best engagement backdrops I’ve ever heard of. Nick proposed at Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, Portugal, one of the most mystical, storybook locations in all of Europe. The trip was already planned to celebrate his 30th birthday, and somewhere between Lisbon, Sintra, Évora, and the Algarve, he got down on one knee.

Obviously, I couldn’t love the idea of a storybook engagement in my native country more!

Washington DC Wedding Photography: Capturing Real Moments

Nick and Kimberly were crystal clear about what they wanted photographically: relaxed, non-posed, spontaneous. We planned to avoid stiff lineup shots and forced smiles in favor of real laughter and connection. That’s my favorite kind of note to receive!

They also thought about incorporating some of DC’s iconic urban landscape into their portrait time. Washington, D.C., offers such a remarkable backdrop for wedding portraits, from the grandeur of the Mall to the tucked-away architecture of neighborhoods like Adams Morgan, where they live, or the industrial-chic corridor of Union Market. The city is endlessly photogenic, and couples who lean into it always end up with images they love.

For any couple getting married in Washington, D.C., and considering where to photograph portraits, I always encourage thinking beyond just the venue. The city is your playground!

We ended up wandering around Union Market after their wedding, and the result was some of my favorite moments of their day. Walking around in full wedding regalia and running into your average Saturday market goer was so much fun. 10/10 recommend.

A Day Built Around What Matters Most

Nick and Kimberly are deeply family-oriented, and that love was woven into every part of their May wedding day. Both families made the trip down from Baltimore, friends who’ve known them for years, and a couple who genuinely just wanted to celebrate and have fun. That’s the best kind of day to document.

Dock 5 held it all beautifully.

If you’re planning a Dock 5 wedding in Washington, D.C., or looking for a Washington, D.C. wedding photographer who loves industrial venues, authentic moments, and couples who make it easy to do great work, I’d love to hear from you.
