Where History Met Hannah and Alex: A Wedding at DAR Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Some venues have a character all their own, even before you plan the uplighting, the tablescapes, and the floral accents. You walk in, and there’s history in the walls, light coming through the windows just right, and you think, yes. This is the place. DAR Headquarters in Washington, D.C. is absolutely one of those places. It couldn’t have been a more perfect fit for Hannah and Alex’s fun DC wedding.

Their Story Started With a Swipe

Like so many of my wedding couples, these two met on an app. But, just as things were starting to get good, the world had other plans.

The pandemic hit, and they both moved back home (to different cities!). Suddenly, a new relationship was being built entirely over texts and phone calls. For a lot of people, that would’ve been the end of it. For Hannah and Alex, it turned into the foundation.

They’ve been doing life together ever since, and for these two, that has been no small feat. Both of them went through medical school, residencies, and all the exhaustion and sacrifice that comes with it. Alex is now in his second year of orthopedic surgery residency. Hannah, who grew up right here in the D.C. area, just wrapped up her chief residency in pediatrics. These are two incredibly driven, deeply caring people, and they also make time for hiking, binge-watching cooking shows, and absolutely spoiling their rescue dog, Gracie.

The Proposal at Zion (Hannah Totally Knew Something Was Up)

Alex proposed in November 2024 at the top of Overlook Canyon in Zion National Park, right as the sun was setting. He’d already asked for Hannah’s parents’ blessing while she was out of town, a sweet, thoughtful touch that says a lot about who he is. And he brought his whole family along for the hike so they could be there the moment it happened!

Here’s the thing, though: Hannah had a feeling. Alex is the kind of guy who once took her up Old Rag in 95-degree heat and navigated a full-on blizzard coming down a Rocky Mountain summit. So when he suggested a short, easy trail at Zion, she noticed. She didn’t say anything, but she noticed and was ready for anything!

The proposal was simple and beautiful, and completely them.

The Venue: DAR Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

If you’ve never been to DAR Headquarters, put it on your list. It’s a historic landmark sitting just a few blocks from the White House. With sweeping views of the Washington Monument, the spaces feel like stepping into another era, in the best possible way. Grand halls, elegant galleries, stunning architecture, and natural light that makes a photographer’s heart sing.

What makes it so special for weddings is how versatile it is. The ceremony and reception can both take place on-site, so your day actually flows. And the space does the heavy lifting. You don’t need to over-decorate when the architecture is already that beautiful. It’s the kind of venue where everything you put in it just looks elevated.

Why It Was Perfect for Hannah and Alex

This city is Hannah’s city. She grew up here, went to school here, and built her entire career here. Choosing D.C. for her wedding wasn’t a logistical decision, it was personal. There’s something really special about celebrating in a place that’s been part of your whole story.

There’s also just something fitting about a couple who spent years serving others, as doctors, as residents, as people who show up for their patients day after day, choosing a venue that’s rooted in service and history. DAR Headquarters isn’t just a pretty space. It stands for that kind of service to others, just like these two.

And capturing DAR for a wedding was a genuine treat. With the cherry blossoms in full bloom on the terrace and historic details everywhere, the whole day was a wow moment. The architecture gives you so much to work with, without ever feeling cold or stuffy. It’s grand and warm at the same time.

And Hannah and Alex made it easy. There’s such a natural ease between them, a warmth that shows up without any prompting. The way they look at each other, the way they laugh, it’s all right there. It was particularly fun that they both had a street hot dog while we were taking wedding portraits. Talk about a sign that their priorities were absolute magic.

These two didn’t have a simple path to get here. They navigated a pandemic, years of medical training, long distance, long hours, and a whole lot of life. And they came out on the other side, choosing each other joyfully and intentionally. They got married surrounded by the people they love most in one of Washington, D.C.'s most beautiful spaces.
